Villagers in a small town in Guangxi Province protested the construction of a chemical plant on June 27, and early the next morning the authorities took away two leaders of the protest. That day, hundreds of villagers participated in a sit-in protest in front of the township government to demand their release, and were met by violent suppression by about 1,000 policepersons. Some of the villagers were injured and four are reportedly still under criminal detention.
