Environmental Activists Detained in Hangzhou
Human Rights in China Press Release, 26/10/2005
Human Rights in China has reported that Tan Kai (譚凱), a rights activist for the environmental civil society group “Green Watch” (Lüse Guancha) who was involved in monitoring a chemical factory in Dongyang City, Zhejiang Province, has been placed under criminal detention by the Hangzhou Public Security Bureau. Tan began monitoring the factory when local residents started to make complaints about the serious pollution in April of this year. The other five members in the same group as Tan were released on October 19, 2005 after being summoned for questioning.
