汕尾拘9示威村民 (Nine Villagers Arrested over Shanwei Incident)

Nine villagers in Dongzhou Village, Shanwei in Guangdong Province have been arrested in connection with an armed police crackdown of a protest over the construction of a power plant. On December 6, local officials said three had been killed in the incident, but reports have cited a higher death toll ranging from eight to over 20. Intellectuals in China, including Ding Zilin, leader of the Tiananmen Mothers Campaign, have issued an open letter to condemn the brutal suppression.

Chinese authorities have rounded up 29 Christians during a raid on an underground church in Henan Province, a move not seen as unusual around Christmas time, Texas-based China Aid Association said. The 29 are church leaders from Anhui and Henan provinces, who are gathering to discuss how to help peasants infected with AIDS.
