Shandong police confirmed yesterday that they are holding blind activist Chen Guangcheng under criminal detention. Chen has been in detention since March, but until yesterday there had been no official word on his whereabouts. The charges, which have not yet been confirmed, are believed to be "damaging public property" and "inciting people to disrupt transport", according to his wife Yuan Weijing, who is under house arrest.
