For the first time, on July 11 Chen Guangcheng was able to meet his lawyers without the presence of the police. According to the lawyers, Chen revealed details of the alleged abduction by police to Shandong from Beijing, beatings and other torture that occurred during interrogation. Chen's brother added that Chen's wife Yuan Weijing would also be detained once her baby's lactation period was over.

Human rights defender Guo Qizhen has been formally indicted on subversion-related charges. Guo was detained on May 12 for posting essays on the Internet and formally arrested on June 6. While the authorities stated that his lawyer Li Jianqiang could see him, Li has twice attempted to see his client in detention but has not been permitted to do so.
