Political activist Yang Jianli (杨建利), a US permanent resident, was released from a Beijing prison on April 27, 2007 after serving a five-year sentence for spying and illegally entering China. He was detained in April 2002 while entering the mainland on a friend's passport after Beijing refused to renew his own due to his involvement in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. According to his lawyer, Yang is still being deprived of his political rights and has no freedom of speech, so he cannot speak with the press. Yang says that he will visit his father's grave before going back to the US.

China Boom 'Threatens Minorities'
BBC, April 25, 2007
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6592157.stm
According to a report jointed published by Human Rights in China and Minority Rights Group International, China's rapid economic development has failed to benefit its ethnic minorities, and their indigenous cultures and languages are also threatened. The report argues that China's policies stoke feelings of resentment amongst communities who see their own culture and way of life under growing threat.

On April 19, Huseyin Celil (塞利尔) was sentenced to life in prison on separatism and terrorism charges by the Urumqi Intermediate People's Court. He was also deprived of his political rights for life. The four witnesses who had planned to testify for him were barred from attending the trial. Yan pleaded not guilty.
