广西青年解放军士兵被送精神科 (Healthy Soldiers Admitted to Guangxi Psychiatric Hospital Due to Bad Relationship with PLA Leaders)
Radio Free Asia, July 30, 2007

guangxi/

Some healthy soldiers are reportedly being kept in a Guangxi hospital for psychiatric treatment because they have offended their leaders in the PLA. Families of some of these soldiers have not been told of the treatment. An anonymous source from the hospital confirmed to RFA in a phone interview that "it is certain that not everyone (admitted to the psychiatric unit) has psychiatric problems." On the other hand, soldiers with real psychiatric issues may not necessarily be given treatment and expelled from the army.

Journalist Pang Jiaoming (庞皎明) of China Economic Times says in his blog that he has recently received several death threats. These occurred after the publication of two stories he wrote on the use of cheaper materials that will affect the quality of rails used for the Wuhan-Guangdong Railway. Pang is not able to confirm whether the stories led directly to the death threats. In related news, the Beijing Daily reportedly received a notice requiring a reduction in "black news reports" which increase public scrutiny and are critical of government actions. Also that such reports would require the signature of the department involved.

On July 24, Zheng Enchong (郑恩宠) and his wife were placed under house arrest again for seeking to attend Zhou Zhengyi’s trial. Earlier that morning, the couple were forcefully prevented from going to the Shanghai Higher People's Court to apply to attend Zhou's trial. The security guards and police officers knocked Zheng to the ground, battered him and dragged him, leading to serious abrasions to his left hand. The couple were then sent to his sister-in-law's home and were not allowed to leave.

上海维权人士陈小明狱中死亡 家人抗议拖延就医 (Shanghai Rights Defender Chen Xiaoming Dead in Prison, Family Criticizes Treatment Delay)
Radio Free Asia, July 13, 2007

chenxiaoming/

Shanghai rights defender Chen Xiaoming (陈小明) died on July 1, shortly after being released on medical parole. Chen's mother protests that the prison authorities delayed his treatment, and Chen's petitioner friend suspected that abuse in prison, instead of liver cancer that a hospital found, was the main cause of his death. Chen was sent to prison after arranging for an American consular official to visit some petitioners.

村长妻子神秘死亡 湛江警民大冲突 (1,000 Guangdong Villagers Clash with Police over Mysterious Death of Village Head's Wife)

On July 8, 1,000 Guangdong villagers clashed with police over the mysterious death of the wife of a village head, leading to injuries of 20 people. The village head, surnamed Lin, was reportedly one of the leaders who refused to agree to an unfair land sale deal. Earlier that date, authorities sent 100 people to Lin's home and took away his wife over their violation of the one-child policy. She died an hour later. The official explanation was that she jumped to her death because she had refused to pay the fines for the violation. Villagers, however, argued that Lin had paid early on, and now their youngest son is already 12. Local media were barred from covering the incident.
