On April 19, Huseyin Celil (塞利尔) was sentenced to life in prison on separatism and terrorism charges by the Urumqi Intermediate People's Court. He was also deprived of his political rights for life. The court held that he had been active in a terrorist organization called the East Turkestan Liberation Organization. Originally from Xinjiang, Celil was recognized as a refugee; he obtained Canadian citizenship in 2005, but Beijing still considers him to be a Chinese citizen. He was detained in Uzbekistan in March 2006 while visiting relatives and was sent to China three months later.
