Centre for Human Rights Shut Down: Beijing Aims to Silence Dissent
Asia News, July 18, 2009
http://www.asianews.it/index.php?l=en&art=15822&size=A
On July 17, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs shut down the law research center Open Constitution Initiative, confiscating its computers and documents. The action was ostensibly because OCI, which was established to provide legal consultation and assistance to the public, had not registered with the government as a civil society organization. Rather, it had registered as a company, as authorities would not accept its registration as an NGO.

Anti-nuclear activist Sun Xiaodi (孙小弟) and his daughter Sun Dunbai (孙敦白), a.k.a. Sun Haiyan (孙海燕), were sentenced on July 16 to Reeducation-Through-Labor by authorities in Gansu. Sun Xiaodi was sentenced to two years, and Sun Dunbai to one-and-a-half years.
