On December 25, 2009, the Beijing Municipal No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court sentenced independent intellectual Liu Xiaobo (刘晓波) to eleven years’ imprisonment and two years’ deprivation of political rights on charges of inciting subversion of state power. Liu was tried on December 23, in a hearing that lasted for less than three hours; his wife was not permitted to attend. According to his lawyers and family, Liu plans to appeal.
