Sichuan activists Ding Mao (丁矛) and Ran Yunfei (冉云飞) have been formally arrested on charges of "inciting subversion of state power." Both men were detained a few days before China's first Jasmine Rally on February 27. Their families were formally notified of the charges on Monday, March 28. Ding, who was previously imprisoned for his involvement in the 1989 Democracy Movement, had passed on information about the Jasmine Rallies. Ran is a well-known blogger and independent intellectual and was amongst the first signers of Charter 08. Ding and Ran are the first of many activists detained in the clampdown surrounding the Jasmine Rallies to be formally charged.
