A group of people, including activists and prominent intellectuals, sent a petition to the NPC Standing Committee urging the committee to grant amnesty to the former editor of Nanfang Dushibao (Southern Metropolis Daily) Yu Huafeng (喻华峰), who is serving a prison sentence for corruption. Yu’s colleague Li Minying was released early on February 12, 2007 after serving three years in prison. In 2004, Li and Yu were sentenced to 6 years and 8 years’ imprisonment, respectively, for corruption, after the newspaper published a series of investigative reports about SARS.
