Tiananmen Mothers Call for China Dialogue on 1989
Reuters, February 27, 2008
Tiananmen Mothers issued an open letter through Human Rights in China, stating that members of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Congress should open a dialogue with the victims of the Tiananmen Crackdown and their families. The group stated that opening a dialogue before the Olympics would send a positive message on China's stance on human rights. In addition to a dialogue, the letter requests that the government open an investigation of the crackdown, issue public apologies and compensation, and investigate the accountability of those responsible.

Further deliberation on the "International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights" during the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; 3. The abolishment of the Reeducation-Through-Labor system. Shandong petitioner Lin Yingming (林英明) is being held in a psychiatric hospital by the Rushan, Shandong police due to repeated petitions in Beijing. RFA speaks with Huang Qi (黄琦), head of Tianwang Human Rights Center, whose help Lin has requested many times; Huang states, "When they brought him to the hospital, they strapped him into the bed and for several days injected him with unknown chemicals. […] He has been again detained in a psychiatric hospital for 53 days, because he continues his accusations. […] We can tell from what he's said and what he's written that he is an extremely healthy person, including his mental health." Fellow petitioner Liu Zhengyou (刘正有) comments that petitioners being retrieved by local police and sent to a psychiatric hospital is hardly unusual, as public security bureaus are wont to stop petitioners by any means necessary.

She thought Hu could not speak freely because many officers were present at the couple's meeting. 山东赶造新胶济 奥运将致强拆有理? (Shandong Authorities Forcefully Resettle Villagers in Order to Build Railway Ahead of the Olympics)
Radio Free Asia, February 12, 2008
http://www.rfa.org/mandarin/shenrubaodao/2008/02/12/qiangchai/
According to RFA, on January 9 in Hancang Village #1 in Shandong Province, after failing to reach an agreement on terms of resettlement, more than 500 personnel forced villagers off of their land on a cold morning. The authorities were accompanied by men armed with wooden planks and steel bars. The clash soon began, with many villagers shouting, "Long Live Chairman Mao!" The clash resulted in approximately 40 wounded, with one 60-year-old woman still unaccounted for, but presumed to be under official custody. One villager attempting to film it from a rooftop was shot by a water cannon, but was later able to send some of the footage to RFA. The company responsible for the railway hopes to have the project completed by May, so that the transportation to the Olympic venue in Qingdao will run smoothly.
