因输血染艾滋的上访人士王小巧被判刑 (AIDS Activist Wang Xiaoqiao Sentenced to One Year in Prison on Extortion Charges)
Radio Free Asia, August 21, 2008
http://www.rfa.org/mandarin/yataibaodao/wangxiaoqiao-08212008090033.html

Wang Xiaoqiao (王小巧), a Henan-based AIDS activist, was sentenced to one year in prison on August 20. She was charged with extortion on the basis of a private agreement for 4800 yuan compensation between the owner of a polluting brick kiln near her farm. Wang's lawyer, Chang (常), has already raised an appeal and states that he believes the basis of the case to be a civil infringement, not criminal. In 1996, Wang's husband contracted HIV through a tainted blood infusion; he did not learn that he was infected for seven years. Wang was detained by police while was petitioning in Zhengzhou, Henan on November 27, 2007, shortly before World AIDS Day (December 1).

Two Women Sentenced to ‘Re-education’ in China
New York Times, August 21, 2008
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/21/sports/olympics/21protest.html
Two elderly petitioners, Wu Dianyuan (吴殿元), 79, and Wang Xiuying (王秀英), 77, have been sentenced to Re-education-Through-Labor after applying several times to demonstrate in the official "protest zones" during the Olympics. The women were applying to protest against insufficient compensation after being forcibly evicted and relocated from their homes in 2001. They were told of their sentence on Monday, August 18, when they went to the police station to inquire on their protest applications. Authorities have yet to sanction a single protest during the Olympics.

Xinhua (via China Daily), August 19, 2008
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2008-08/19/content_6948065.htm

According to a Public Security Bureau spokesperson, Beijing authorities have received 77 applications for protests. Of those, 74 were withdrawn voluntarily “after amicable settlements between the parties and authorities,” two were suspended, and one was denied due to violating the Law on Assembly, Demonstration, and Protest. Authorities have established three protest parks during the Olympics – Zizhuyuan Park, Ritan Park, and World Park. They have yet to host officially-sanctioned protesters.

In the weeks before the Olympics, many rights defenders and activists were asked by authorities to leave Beijing; others came under surveillance by authorities. Tiananmen Mothers' Zhang Xianling (张先玲) reports to RFA that she has been under "loose surveillance" by authorities since July 29, and that fellow Tiananmen Mother Ding Zilin (丁子霖) and her husband were "invited" to travel outside Beijing by authorities on August 1. Additionally, democracy activist Jiang Qisheng (江棋生) reports that he was also told to leave Beijing before the Opening Ceremonies, but he refused. Since August 7, he has been under surveillance.
