18 women from Taishi village of Panyu district in Guangzhou had been arrested by local police at 5:45 am yesterday to break their hunger strike in front of the district government office, which started yesterday. The women were released at noon after questioning.

China Has Arrested American on Suspicion of Spying for Taiwan

The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed the arrest of Xie Chunren(谢纯仁), a Chinese-born American businessman who runs a nutritional company in Sichuan, on May 31,2005 in Sichuan. Xie has been accused of "engaging in activities harmful to the security of the People's Republic of China", and put under "residential surveillance under suspicion of espionage for Taiwan".

Sun Xiaodi (孫小弟), an mine worker of Gansu No.792 Uranium Mine who had petitioned to the Beijing government over radiation poisoning in the working area, was reportedly taken away by public security police on April 28 and gone missing for 110 days. According to a friend of Sun, police accused Sun of engaging in a "very serious crime related to state secrets", as he had spoken to an AFP journalist.
