In its latest annual report, Paris-based Reporters Without Borders describes China as being a "cancer" in Asia's democratic system. The report says that faced with growing social unrest, the government has chosen to impose news blackouts, force the media—including the Internet—to practice self-censorship, and keep out foreign media.

Hong Kong newspapers have reported an unnamed source as saying that journalist Ching Cheong (程翔)), held in jail on charges of espionage since last April, will stand trial in Beijing very soon, indicating that the prosecution has gathered enough evidence for the charge. A legal researcher said that Ching may be given a maximum jail term of 10 years.

Yahoo has been accused of providing personal information on Chinese dissident writer Wang Xiaoning (王小宁) to the Chinese government, which led to Wang's 10-year prison sentence in 2003 for inciting subversion of state power. Amongst the evidence against Wang, the court accused Wang of criticizing China as being an "authoritarian dictatorship" in articles sent through his mainland-based Yahoo email account.

A Hong Kong government privacy commission has formally filed a complaint against Yahoo! Holdings (Hong Kong) Ltd. for providing the Chinese government with personal information about Shi Tao, which ultimately led to his current 10-year prison sentence. In addition, Reporters Without Borders says it has requested the Chinese government to release Shi Tao on medical parole due to his worsening health condition.
