Ching Cheong’s trial on espionage charges concluded yesterday but no verdict has yet been announced. Ching was reportedly allowed to briefly defend himself during the closed trial. According to court officials, the court room was “so small” that only family members could attend.

Lu Jianhua (陆建华), an academic with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), went on trial in Beijing today. His wife said she was not clear about the specific charge against him but said it involved state secrets, which is why she and the public were barred from the courtroom. She also believed her husband's case was related to that of Ching Cheong, who was tried on espionage charges yesterday.

Tan Kai (谭凯), a founding leader of the banned environmental group "Green Watch," was sentenced to 1.5 years’ imprisonment by a local court in Hangzhou on August 11. His lawyer, Li Heping, stated that Tan was originally detained on charges of “providing state secrets abroad,” but the charge for which he was prosecuted was “illegally procuring state secrets.” Li believes that the sentence is unjust and contends that Tan is innocent. The charge was based on the fact that, while doing computer repair work, Tan saved sensitive information on his own computer. Tan's colleague at Green Watch believes that the crime was fabricated and the real issue was the group's controversial work.

环保人士谭凯被判一年半刑期 (Environmentalist Tan Kai Sentenced to 1.5 Years’ Imprisonment)
Radio Free Asia, August 11, 2006
http://www.rfa.org/mandarin/shenrubaodao/2006/08/
11/huanbao/

Reporters Without Borders has expressed concern that the editor of e-Wiki, an online Chinese encyclopedia, felt obliged to close down in late July due to government pressure. Experts point out that this Website and the popular Website Wikipedia, which was closed down last year, are difficult for the authorities to control because their content is written and edited by users.
