Chinese diplomats in Nepal are trying to track down and silence Western climbers and Sherpas who witnessed the shooting to death of at least two Tibetan refugees on the Nangpa La mountain pass on September 30. Fears grow for the safety of a group of Tibetan children who were marched away by Chinese security personnel on the pass. According to witnesses, Chinese soldiers took aim and fired towards the group of fleeing refugees for 15 minutes.

The villagers were protesting the death of a young person in their village who they believe died due to police negligence. Zhou Zhirong (周志荣), who organized a protest at Tiananmen Square last month of 32 displaced farmers, has been detained by police. Zhou was acting as a representative for immigrants from the Chibi Reservoir area in Hubei Province, who had been displaced from their homes last year. The 32 farmers knelt in Tiananmen Square and cried in protest of their situation for 10 minutes on September 26. Zhou’s friend and fellow protestor Hong Yunzhou (洪运周) was also summoned by police and has been missing for more than 10 days.

According to Human Rights in China, Yuan Weijing (袁伟静), the wife of blind activist Chen Guangcheng, was stopped and detained by police in Linyi City, Shandong Province, on October 3 where she and her daughter were in transit on the way to her parents' home for the Mid-Autumn Festival. The police threatened to arrest her if she insisted on visiting her parents, where her three-year-old son also lives. She was released after about ten hours' interrogation.

Rights activist Yang Maodong (杨茂东), also known as Guo Feixiong (郭飞雄), was formally arrested on September 28, after being taken into police custody more than two weeks ago, according to his wife. He is being held for allegedly running an illegal business. His wife said that the arrest was a trick in order to prevent them from applying for bail for her husband, which was scheduled for September 29. Guo was involved in helping villagers in Taishi Village, Guangdong Province to recall their headman due to corruption allegations last year, for which he was arrested and held for nearly four months.
