According to information confirmed by the authorities, two leaders of an underground Catholic church, Shao Zhumin (邵祝敏) and Jiang Sunian (姜溯念), were arrested in Shenzhen on September 25 as they entered the country after visiting the Vatican. The Hong Kong-based Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said they were accused of illegally leaving China by using other people’s identities and would likely face sentences of about one year in prison. China does not normally grant passports to clergy from underground Catholic churches, to prevent them from having contact with the Vatican.
