Suspect's Custody Death Puts Police Under Scrutiny
SCMP, December 09, 2006
http://china.scmp.com/chitoday/ZZZSKMRSGVE.html
On November 22, farmer and driver He Yujiang left his home in Hebei Province to buy construction materials. Two days later, the family was informed by police that He was ill, but when they went to visit him, they found that he had unaccountably died in police custody. He’s family later learned that he had been taken to the police station for questioning about a theft. He's relatives suspect that he was tortured, but they were forbidden from taking photographs of the body and are worried that prosecutors won’t tell the truth if an autopsy is performed.

Radio Free Asia, December 06, 2006

It has been reported that the death penalty for Chen Tao (陈滔), who was arrested in 2004 for protesting the demolition of farmers’ housing, was ratified by the Sichuan Higher People's Court in June and carried out in late November. However, neither Chen’s family nor his lawyer were formally notified of the court’s ruling. Chen’s lawyer stated that forensic evidence suggested Chen did not murder a policeman during the protest, as he had been charged. Three other individuals arrested with Chen are serving long prison terms.

Five villagers in Guangxi Province charged with "gathering a crowd to attack a state organ" stood trial on December 5. The incident dated back to June, when some 1,000 villagers staged a sit-in protest against the land conscription involved in the construction of an electrolyte plant which was less than 100 meters from village residences. The police responded by deploying hundreds of police officers to arrest more than a dozen suspected protest organizers, five of which were eventually charged. The court has not announced a verdict yet.

Last Thursday, more than 1,000 residents of Xichong Village in Shunde City, Guangdong Province held the wife of a former village party secretary and the son of a local official hostage to demand the release of some 20 villagers who had been arrested over a land dispute. The hostages were later released and police released some of the villagers the following day, but are still holding 18 rights defenders, who have been placed under criminal detention on charges of disturbing public order.
