Li Lijuan, a café owner in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, has been sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of “causing a serious disturbance” by the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court in a closed trial on November 24, 2006. Her family and lawyers had no knowledge about the trial and did not attend. Li's conviction is reportedly in relation to an act in March of this year, when she wrote protest slogans against forced evictions by the local government on a street wall.

The case of human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng has been sent to the Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court, but officials refused to specify the charges against him, arguing that his case involved "state secrets." Requests by Gao’s lawyer, Mo Shaoping, to see Gao have been refused, which Mo states is in contravention of the law. According to friend and fellow rights defender Hu Jia, Gao told his wife on December 6 that he did not want to hire a lawyer, but Gao’s wife does not know why he made such a statement.

On November 22, farmer and driver He Yujiang left his home in Hebei Province to buy construction materials. Two days later, the family was informed by police that He was ill, but when they went to visit him, they found that he had unaccountably died in police custody. He’s family later learned that he had been taken to the police station for questioning about a theft. He's relatives suspect that he was tortured, but they were forbidden from taking photographs of the body and are worried that prosecutors won’t tell the truth if an autopsy is performed.

Radio Free Asia, December 06, 2006

It has been reported that the death penalty for Chen Tao (陈滔), who was arrested in 2004 for protesting the demolition of farmers’ housing, was ratified by the Sichuan Higher People's Court in June and carried out in late November. However, neither Chen’s family nor his lawyer were formally notified of the court’s ruling. Chen’s lawyer stated that forensic evidence suggested Chen did not murder a policeman during the protest, as he had been charged. Three other individuals arrested with Chen are serving long prison terms.
