Anti-pollution activist Wu Lihong (吴立红) was tortured by police from Yixing, Jiangsu Province, his lawyer Ms Zhu alleged on May 31. Zhu said she was only allowed to see Wu for the first time on May 30, even though Wu had been in custody for more than six weeks. Wu told Zhu that police refused to let them meet earlier due to the fact bruises on his body had not disappeared. During their meeting, Zhu reportedly saw black and blue marks on Wu's arms. Khenpo Tsanor (堪布查诺), the former chief abbot of a monastery based in Golog Tibetan Prefecture, Qinghai Province, was forced to step down in mid-May 2007. His forced resignation came after he refused to sign government documents condemning the Dalai Lama. An anonymous local official said local authorities were in the process of stepping up their patriotic re-education campaign, aiming to make the monastery a "model" monastery comprising only of monks loyal to China.

Khenpo Tsanor (堪布查诺), the former chief abbot of a monastery based in Golog Tibetan Prefecture, Qinghai Province, was forced to step down in mid-May 2007. His forced resignation came after he refused to sign government documents condemning the Dalai Lama. An anonymous local official said local authorities were in the process of stepping up their patriotic re-education campaign, aiming to make the monastery a "model" monastery comprising only of monks loyal to China.
