Noted HIV/AIDS activist Hu Jia (胡佳) was released from prison on Sunday; police and security officers surrounded Hu’s home following his release. According to a Public Security Bureau spokesperson, Beijing authorities have received 77 applications for protests. Of those, 74 were withdrawn voluntarily “after amicable settlements between the parties and authorities,” two were suspended, and one was denied due to violating the Law on Assembly, Demonstration, and Protest. Authorities have established three protest parks during the Olympics – Zizhuyuan Park, Ritan Park, and World Park. They have yet to host officially-sanctioned protesters.

Beijing-based rights defender Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕) and her daughter have still not been in contact with their family, friends, or lawyer since their disappearance on August 7 according to Zeng's lawyer, Li Fangping (李方平). Li suspects that she and her daughter have been removed from Beijing by the police until the end of the Olympic period. Zeng Jinyan is married to prominent HIV/AIDS activist Hu Jia (胡佳). Hu was convicted of “inciting subversion of state power” in April 2008; he is currently serving his sentence of three and a half years.

AIDS activist and human rights defender Hu Jia (胡佳) was sentenced to three and a half years' imprisonment and one year's deprivation of his political rights on April 3, 2008. Reportedly one of Hu's lawyers, Li Fangping, proposes that Hu appeal the sentence, but Li has not yet spoken with Hu on this subject. Hu Jia was charged with "inciting subversion of state power" on the basis of political articles that he posted online and interviews that he gave to foreign media.

Human rights defender Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕) gave an interview to RFA on February 21, although she suspected the phone conversation was monitored. For the past two months she has been barred from external communication. On February 17, she visited her husband, human rights defender Hu Jia (胡佳), in a detention center. She thought Hu could not speak freely because many officers were present at the couple's meeting. Jurist Teng Biao (滕彪) said Zeng was allowed to see Hu before a verdict was delivered due to international and domestic condemnation of Hu Jia's arrest.

Six Uyghurs arrested during a raid at a training camp in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on January 5, 2007 were sentenced by a Kashgar court on November 10, 2007. Three received death sentences, two death with a two-year suspension and one life imprisonment under charges of separatism, organizing and leading a terrorist organization and manufacturing explosives. The government mouthpiece Xinhua reported that they set up a terrorist organization known as the East Turkestan Islamic Party and believe that the group has links to al-Qaeda and overseas terrorist groups. Critics believe that these are excuses to crack down on the pro-independence movement among Uyghurs.
