The trial of New York Times researcher Zhao Yan (赵岩), who has been detained for 22 months since September 2004, took place behind closed doors in a Beijing Court and ended on June 16, with no verdict reached. According to one of Zhao's lawyers, Zhao pleaded not guilty to the charges of fraud and leaking state secrets. The court rejected Zhao's bail application. The lawyer added that it was not immediately clear when there would be a verdict. If convicted of leaking state secrets, Zhao could face a prison terms of 10 years.

On June 15th, journalist Yang Xiaoqing was convicted on charges of fabricating corruption stories in an attempt to blackmail the authorities and given a one-year sentence by a local court in Hunan Province. He immediately said he would appeal this decision, arguing that he merely reported on alleged corruption among local officials.

Three Gorges resettlement activist Fu Xiancai (付先财) was struck by an unknown assailant and left paralyzed after being questioned by police on June 8th about an interview he had provided to a German public television station. Fu has been petitioned to various authorities over the resettlement terms and compensation for the affected villagers of the Three Gorges Project.

According to the lawyer of detained journalist Zhao Yan(赵岩) , the government has notified the family that Zhao's trial has been scheduled for June 16, at the Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court. Zhao, a researcher for the New York Times, has been in custody for 22 months since he was taken away by police in September 2004. He was formally indicted on charges of fraud and revealing state secrets in December 2005.

Shandong police confirmed yesterday that they are holding blind activist Chen Guangcheng under criminal detention. Chen has been in detention since March, but until yesterday there had been no official word on his whereabouts. The charges, which have not yet been confirmed, are believed to be "damaging public property" and "inciting people to disrupt transport", according to his wife Yuan Weijing, who is under house arrest.
