According to Yan Zhengxue's wife, Yan, age 64, was interrogated under inhumane conditions while being held in detention in Zhejiang Province. The police questioned him all night and made him sit up while being interrogated, which caused extra pain due to his kidney problems. According to Chinese PEN, the crimes Yan was accused of committing include: i) being a secret member of the China Democracy Party; ii) publishing articles on foreign websites; iii) fundraising for journalist Liu Binyan (刘宾雁) and iv) intervening in a land grab incident in Zhejiang. In related news, China Democracy Party member Zhu Yufu (朱虞夫) has been released from detention but is under strict surveillance.

Student Dies as Villagers Riot in Protest at Public Transport Fees

An armed crackdown by police on 20,000 protesting farmers in Hunan Province has been continuing since March 9. The protestors had asked the local authorities to intervene in the raising of public transport costs by over 80 percent during the Lunar New Year. The protestors became violent after the bus company brought in thugs. One junior high school student was reportedly killed and several dozen of people were injured, but an official denied that any deaths had occurred.

Chinese media have been urged to strictly follow the official line during the NPC and CPPCC sessions. The authorities have expanded a non-coverage list, which already consisted of hundreds of "politically sensitive" topics or keywords. For example, news Web sites have been ordered not to publish anything critical of the controversial Property Law. The latest issue of Caijing magazine, scheduled to be released on March 5, was still not available at newsstands yesterday - it carried a cover story on the debate over the Property Law and the authorities ordered it to be withdrawn.

According to a recent report, a handwritten poster that Chinese authorities designated "separatist" when it appeared in 2003 in a small town in Xinjiang has led to a wave of arrests, interrogations and fines for local people. Ten Guangxi farmers who had participated in a protest in January 2007 have been put under criminal detention for committing the crime of 'interfering with official duties' before the Chinese New Year. Three have since been released, while the other seven farmers have reportedly received formal arrest notifications from the Guangxi People's Procuratorate on January 19, 2007. In January, about a hundred farmers staged a protest against a local paper-making factory for causing severe environmental pollution in the locality.

Guo Feixiong's case has been sent to a procuratorate office in Guangzhou for re-examination. Sources say Guo was detained over the publication of a book on politics in Shenyang. Given that an alleged accomplice of Guo’s has already been tried, Guo's lawyer argues that the separate treatment for the two is unjustified procedurally. Guo was sent to Shenyang in mid-January and his wife speculates that he is still detained there now.

Shenzhen authorities have taken measures against a number of residents for protesting the construction of the new Shenzhen-Hong Kong Western Corridor. About 500 villagers have been organizing protests against the construction, which could take place less than 90 meters from some of their homes, at the municipal government building since last October. As a result, a dozen village representatives were indicted on "disrupting social order" or "organizing illegal demonstration" charges.
