Beijing frees US citizen accused of spying for Taiwan

U.S citizen Xie Chunren was released on September 4 after being detained for almost 100 day on suspicion of spying for Taiwan Authority. The release was made on the day before President Hu left on the diplomatic tour to Canada, Mexico and U.S.A.

Riot police seize files being guarded by protesting villagers

Guangdong Panyu local authority mobilized some 1000 riot police yesterday to Taishi village, where dozens of villagers, mostly women elderly women, holding fort inside the local government office in the village to prevent theft of files, were arrested. The villagers said that the files were important as they might provide valid evidence that the village chief Chen Jinsheng had embezzled collective funds.
