Li Weiping, a democracy activist who took part in the 1989 movement and was later imprisoned for three years, issued a statement on the Internet on Wednesday revealing that Beijing state secrets personnel had asked him in February to “cooperate” with them in gathering information on democracy activities. If he refused, he would not be allowed to stay in Beijing. Although police gave him a deadline of June 11 to leave, his landlord has now cancelled his lease and Li must move immediately.
