Human Rights Watch has announced in its World Report 2006 that China has backtracked on its human rights record over the year, as authorities tightened their rein on Internet censorship, cracked down on outspoken journalists and media, and discouraged petitioners from redressing their grievances through administrative means.

Beijing-based human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng said he was almost killed when a vehicle braked suddenly in front of his car while he was driving on a highway Tuesday night. Gao said he believed it was an assassination attempt plotted against him by the authorities, but the Beijing Public Security Bureau has declined to comment on the matter.
