Banned Chinese Director to Defy Orders

Director Lou Ye (娄烨) plans to defy a government order banning him from making films for five years. The ban was prompted by the screening of his movie at the Cannes Film Festival before it cleared censors in China. The film is a sexually explicit love story set against the June 4th incident. Lou said he was under pressure to screen the film at Cannes because of marketing needs.

Authorities in the Tibetan region of Karze in Sichuan Province have held Khenpo Jina, the abbot of a major monastery, in detention since August 23. The detention is possibly in connection with the appearance of posters supporting Tibetan independance one year ago.
