The trial of New York Times researcher Zhao Yan (赵岩), who has been detained for 22 months since September 2004, took place behind closed doors in a Beijing Court and ended on June 16, with no verdict reached. According to one of Zhao's lawyers, Zhao pleaded not guilty to the charges of fraud and leaking state secrets. The court rejected Zhao's bail application.
