Stop Torturing Suspects to Get Confessions, Says Prosecutor
SCMP, November 21, 2006

A deputy procurator-general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate has called on mainland police to stop using torture. He said at least 30 wrongful verdicts were due to confessions extracted by torture or other coercive tactics every year, and nearly every wrongful verdict in recent years was related to illegal interrogation. China previously had denied claims made by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture that torture was still widely practiced in the country.
