Shanghai rights defender Chen Xiaoming (陈小明) died on July 1, shortly after being released on medical parole. Chen's mother protests that the prison authorities delayed his treatment, and Chen's petitioner friend suspected that abuse in prison, instead of liver cancer that a hospital found, was the main cause of his death. Chen was sent to prison after arranging for an American consular official to visit some petitioners.

Radio Free Asia, July 10, 2007

/zhanjiang/

On July 8, 1,000 Guangdong villagers clashed with police over the mysterious death of the wife of a village head, leading to injuries of 20 people. The village head, surnamed Lin, was reportedly one of the leaders who refused to agree to an unfair land sale deal. Earlier that date, authorities sent 100 people to Lin's home and took away his wife over their violation of the one-child policy. She died an hour later. The official explanation was that she jumped to her death because she had refused to pay the fines for the violation. Villagers, however, argued that Lin had paid early on, and now their youngest son is already 12. Local media were barred from covering the incident.

Guo Feixiong (郭飞雄) was tried in Guangdong on July 9 on charges of illegal business activity over the publication of a book he edited about a political sandal in Shenyang. Guo's wife quoted Guo in saying that his trial was completely a case of political persecution. It is because 90 per cent of questions Guo was asked in custody related to his activities in Taishi village, not illegal publishing. Guo pleaded not guilty, and a verdict has yet to be delivered.

The family of Shanghai petitioner Mao Hengfeng (毛恒风) has informed RFA that Mao has been tortured in prison. She was beaten and confined in a room with no sunlight or fresh air. She did not have a bed so she had to sleep on the floor. Mao did not eat the food other inmates brought to her—she was not allowed out of her cell to get food herself—because she was worried they would poison her. The authorities then force-fed her. She was also forced to strip half-naked in front of male inmates and police officers.

On June 29, 10,000 Chongqing protestors clashed with police after local authorities failed to deal with the stabbing to death of a Form One student. At least four people were reportedly arrested and more than 10 injured in the clash. A blogger said there was a delay in the rescue of the student. The alleged perpetrators of the murder, also students, were reportedly released soon after questioning because they were too young to be charged.
