On October 17 housing activist and Protestant house church member Hua Huiqi (华惠棋) was beaten again by five or six plainclothes policemen while under house arrest after leaving the hospital. Hua's wife said the beating was due to the 17th Party Congress and Hua's refusal to provide a list of petitioners and Christians he knew. Hua's sister was also beaten. The Beijing Public Security Bureau has not responded to AP's inquiries concerning the beatings. Hua Huiqi has been arrested and beaten several times because of his petition against his house demolition in 2001and his religious activities. On October 11, rights defender Hua Huiqi (华惠棋) was beaten unconscious in Beijing’s Chongwen district amid a fight reportedly among police officers from two stations and private security guards. Hua and his family were forcibly moved out of their apartment by the police from Chongwen district to the Fengtai district on October 8, but then Fengtai police brought Hua back to his Chongwen home on October 11. Then, a fight broke out among the two police teams and security guards hired by the New World China Land, which has been tearing down old houses in Hua’s old neighborhood for redevelopment. Hua was knocked unconscious during the fight. Police declined comment.

RFA reported on October 10 that Beijing landlord Zhao Xiuyun (赵秀云) was beaten by police for renting her courtyard house to rights defenders Hua Huiqi (华惠琪), Sun Xiaodi (孙小弟) and Zhou Li (周莉). The authorities have removed Hua, Sun and Zhou from the courtyard house, even though they have signed rental contracts with Zhao and none of the parties to the contracts wish to terminate them. The police warned Zhao not to rent to rights defenders anymore and are currently stationed in the courtyard house to bar Hua and others from returning.

Heilongjiang land rights activist Yang Chunlin (杨春林), arrested on subversion charges in August after circulating a petition opposing the Beijing Olympics, was allegedly tortured in prison, his sister and a Hong Kong-based rights NGO said on October 8. A released inmate imprisoned with Yang told his sister that Yang’s arms and legs were stretched and chained to four corners of an iron bed. The rights group said victims subjected to this treatment would feel pain all over their bodies after a prolong period. Moreover, the sister said Yang had been forced to clean up the excrement of prisoners subjected to similar torture.
