A relative of the family alleged the girl's parents had accepted the money and claimed their daughter had died of a heart attack. Chinese officials have denied that anyone was killed during the demonstration.

About 50 villagers were injured, and a further 100 were detained, during a clash with military police dispatched to break up a protest over land acquisition in Panlong village in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province. During the Saturday protest, which involved some 10,000 villagers, police beat protestors at random and it was rumored that a 13-year-old girl had died as a result.

China-based researchers are expressing outrage at the Chinese authorities' ban on access to Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia run by a non-profit organization in Florida. Access to the website has been completely blocked since October 2005. In 2004, there were two incidents of temporary suspension, reportedly because the web site contains materials related to sensitive issues such as Tibet and the Tiananmen Square protests.
