Police Hold Activist's Lawyer Until End of Trial
SCMP, August 21, 2006
http://china.scmp.com/chimain/ZZZ44O7XZQE.html
Rights defender Chen Guangcheng's trial was held on August 18 but no verdict was announced. The day before the trial, Chen's defense lawyer Xu Zhiyong was beaten up and detained for almost 24 hours, after which officials appointed two local lawyers to represent Chen, despite his objections. Chen's own lawyers filed a complaint with the court stating that the trial was invalid, since the government-appointed lawyers had only one hour to prepare a defense and were not familiar with the case.
