On April 4, 2009, Sun Wenguang (孙文广), 75, retired professor of Shandong University, was severely beaten by five unidentified men as he defied university authorities to make the trip to Yingxiong Mountain (英雄山) in Jinan, Shandong Province to mourn late Party Secretary Zhao Ziyang. He was then hospitalized and diagnosed with 3 broken ribs. Currently he is reportedly in stable condition. Between 1966 and 1981, Professor Sun was detained and imprisoned multiple times for a total of more than ten years for expressing his opinions on political issues.

Zhang Jinfeng (张金凤), a Shandong petitioner was sentenced to one year and nine months of Reeducation-Through-Labor. Zhang was taking photos at a peaceful rally in Jinan, Shandong Province, on March 5, when she was detained with several others. The rally, attended by several hundred petitioners, was convened on the opening day of the 2009 session of the National People’s Congress to show support for the Chinese League of Victims (中国冤民大同盟).

Beijing Human Rights Law Firm Shut Down

Yitong, a Beijing law firm known for taking on sensitive cases, was ordered to shut down for six months on Tuesday, purportedly for allowing one of its lawyers to practice without a license. Lawyers at the firm believe the real reason for the shutdown is the participation of several of the firm’s lawyers in an effort to institute a direct election in the Beijing Lawyers Association.

Prominent labor activist Yao Fuxin (姚福信) was released from prison on Monday after serving out his seven-year term. Yao was detained in 2002 after speaking at a peaceful demonstration on behalf of workers demanding back wages and pension payments and charged with “subversion of state power.” Yao endured beatings and persecution from other inmates while in prison.
