Lu Banglie(吕邦烈), deputy to the Zhijiang People's Congress in Hubei Province, has disappeared after being dragged from his car and beaten up on Saturday while he was on his way to visit Taishi Village in Guangdong Province with Benjamin Joffe Walt, a reporter for The Guardian newspaper. The reporter was removed from the car and taken to a government office in Yuwoutou Township and later released. Mr. Lu's whereabouts are still unknown. Beijing Communication Authority ordered to close a university website, Yannan Wang, on September 30, citing no reasons for the closure. The move is believed to target on He Weifang (賀衛方), a law professor of the university who had petitioned to the Principal against closing down a student website. He refused to take PhD students in protest. He's academic activities have been reportedly restricted to a minimum level and his daily activities have been closely watched by the government.

Panyu clears village chief of corruption

Panyu City government in Guangdong Province announced in an official statement that Taishi villagers had agreed to withdraw their protests to remove the village chief Chen Jinsheng, ending the three month long struggle. The statement said that dispute was "stirred up" by "irresponsible" media and villagers were now confident of the Village Chief. Yet, villagers refused to comment on the incident.

Zhang Yinan (鄭義南), the 47-year-old prominent activist in China's underground Protestant church, was released from a labor camp on September 25, after serving a two-year sentence in a re-education through labour camp near the central China city of Zhengzhou. Zhang was sentenced in 2003 without trial on the charge of attempting to subvert China's government and political system. Police confiscated Zhang's identification card, restricting him from traveling.
