Song Shitai, the representative of hundreds of families living around Pudong’s Xueye Estate, said that he was beaten up by district officials yesterday morning after trying to contact overseas media about the government's move to evict the Pudong district residents to make way for the 2010 World Expo.

Peng Ming, the founder of the China Development Union who was charged with involvement in terrorist activities, kidnappings and possession of counterfeit banknotes, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Wuhan, Hubei Province yesterday.
Peng disappeared while traveling to Myanmar and was formally arrested in August of last year.
