Chinese Security Forces Detain Bishop

Julius Jia Zhiguo, an elderly bishop in the underground Roman Catholic Church, was detained in the northern city of Zhengding on Wednesday, the U.S.-based Cardinal Kung Foundation reported. A spokesman for the Zhengding Public Security Bureau denied that such an arrest had been made. According to the Foundation, however, this is the eighth time that Julius has been detained in the past two years because of his refusal to affiliate with the State-controlled Catholic Patriotic Association.

Cai Zhuohua (蔡卓華), an underground house church minister, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment by the Beijing Intermediate People's Court for printing and distributing Christian publications in exchange for money. Cai's wife and brother, who are facing the same charges, were given sentences of two years and 18 months, respectively.
