More than 200 policepersons were called in to put down a protest against corruption and land grabs in a village in Liaoning Province on July 13. Four of the protesters were formally arrested, three are under detention and three were severely injured and are still in hospital. While several officials were dismissed after the incident, the arrest of protestors is ongoing and there is no sign that the authorities want to hold discussions with the villagers.

On August 2, police detained 90 protestors who were demanding the release of two clergymen in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. At least two of the protestors were “seriously injured” and a woman suffered a miscarriage. Seventy of those detained were later released while 20 individuals are still being held by the police. The demonstrators were protesting the detention of bishop Yao Liang (姚良) and priest Li Huisheng (李会生) of China’s underground Catholic church.

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy has recently confirmed that the 10-year prison sentence handed down to Tibetan Dolma Kyab (卓玛嘉因) in September of last year was upheld by the Lhasa People's Intermediate Court on November 30, 2005. Dolma Kyab was convicted on charges of “endangering state security” for writing a manuscript called "Himalaya on Stir," which includes 57 essays on democracy, the sovereignty of Tibet, and other issues.
