Yitong, a Beijing law firm known for taking on sensitive cases, was ordered to shut down for six months on Tuesday, purportedly for allowing one of its lawyers to practice without a license. Lawyers at the firm believe the real reason for the shutdown is the participation of several of the firm’s lawyers in an effort to institute a direct election in the Beijing Lawyers Association.

Yao was detained in 2002 after speaking at a peaceful demonstration on behalf of workers demanding back wages and pension payments and charged with “subversion of state power.” Yao endured beatings and persecution from other inmates while in prison.

Yang Zili (杨子立) and Zhang Honghai (张宏海) were released after serving out their eight year sentences. Two of four members of the political discussion society New Youth Study Group who were imprisoned for their political activities in 2001, both were convicted of “subversion of state power” and endured harsh abuses in prison. The other two imprisoned group members, Xu Wei (徐伟) and Jin Haike (靳海科) remain in prison serving out their ten year sentences.
