Earthquake in China kills nearly 9,000
Reuters, May 12, 2008

China's most devastating earthquake in three decades killed nearly 9,000 people on Monday, with the toll likely to soar as authorities struggle to reach casualties in large areas cut off from relief. The earthquake that hit China's southwestern province of Sichuan killed 8,533 people, the official Xinhua news agency said on Monday, citing the provincial government. The epicentre of the 7.8 magnitude quake was in a mountainous region about 100 km from Sichuan's capital Chengdu, a bustling city of 10 million.

Radio Free Asia, February 01, 2008

Disabled democracy activist Qi Zhiyong (齐志勇) has been out of contact since around January 8. His friend Li Hai (李海) said he has tried to contact Qi through the Internet, Qi’s cell phone, and other methods, but has had no success. Li speculated that if Qi has been detained by the authorities, then the reason for his detention is that he revealed information about Hu Jia (胡佳) after Hu was detained late last December.
