2 officers walk free in torture killing

On August 12, 2009, a court in Jiangxi Province found three policemen and their commander guilty in connection with the death of Wan Jianguo (万建国), who died in August 2008 on his 35th day of detention. Convicted policeman Deng Hongfei (邓鸿飞) was sentenced to 12 years in prison; the commander Xia Xiangdong (夏向东) was sentenced to one year in prison; and two other officers Guo Songlin (郭松林) and Xiong Yu’ er (熊玉儿) were allowed to walk free.

On September 2007, rights defense lawyer Gao Zhisheng (高智晟) was kidnapped and brutally tortured by Chinese authorities. His firsthand account of these events has surfaced, detailing violent beatings, electric shocks to his genitals, and having his eyes burnt by lit cigarettes. Previously, Gao had been sentenced to prison in 2006 for writing open letters critical of the Chinese government’s suppression of Falun Gong. On February 4, 2009, Gao was taken from his home by security police and has not been heard from since.

The European Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to human rights defender Hu Jia (胡佳) yesterday in Strasbourg. Mr. Hu’s wife, Zeng Jinyan, gave an acceptance speech on his behalf via a video message. Ms. Zeng is currently under house arrest in Beijing.
