Radio Free Asia, March 28, 2008

RFA reports that Yang Chunlin (杨春林) told his lawyer on March 28, 2008 (Friday), that he intends to appeal his sentence. At the same time, Yang stated that he is still being abused in detention. Yang's son had previously told the press that he did not think that Yang would appeal, due to Yang's view that the Chinese courts "lack legitimacy." Yang Chunlin organized an open letter campaign in 2007, entitled “We want human rights, not the Olympics." The letter received more than 10,000 signatures. He was sentenced to five years in jail on March 24, 2008, on charges of inciting subversion of state power.

Radio Free Asia, February 12, 2008
http://www.rfa.org/mandarin/shenrubaodao/2008/02/12/qiangchai/
According to RFA, on January 9 in Hancang Village #1 in Shandong Province, after failing to reach an agreement on terms of resettlement, more than 500 personnel forced villagers off of their land on a cold morning. The authorities were accompanied by men armed with wooden planks and steel bars. The clash soon began, with many villagers shouting, "Long Live Chairman Mao!" The clash resulted in approximately 40 wounded, with one 60-year-old woman still unaccounted for, but presumed to be under official custody. One villager attempting to film it from a rooftop was shot by a water cannon, but was later able to send some of the footage to RFA. The company responsible for the railway hopes to have the project completed by May, so that the transportation to the Olympic venue in Qingdao will run smoothly.

Representative of Heilongjiang land grab victims Yu Changwu (于长武) was sentenced to two years’ Reeducation-Through-Labor (RTL) on charges of endangering state security on January 17, 2008, according to Yu’s family. Yu and other lands rights activists in Fujin declared in November, 2007 that 966 hectares of land which was seized by the local government 13 years ago belonged to 900 villagers. However, Yu’s family reportedly said his sentence is not because of his land rights campaign but because he talked to foreign media. Dr Fu Hualing of the University of Hong Kong finds the sentence “ridiculous”, as an RTL sentence is only for minor offences, but endangering state security cannot be a minor offence.
