Human rights defender Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕) gave an interview to RFA on February 21, although she suspected the phone conversation was monitored. For the past two months she has been barred from external communication. On February 17, she visited her husband, human rights defender Hu Jia (胡佳), in a detention center. She thought Hu could not speak freely because many officers were present at the couple's meeting. Jurist Teng Biao (滕彪) said Zeng was allowed to see Hu before a verdict was delivered due to international and domestic condemnation of Hu Jia's arrest.

On January 24, 2008, four German journalists attempting to interview Yuan Weijing (袁伟静), wife of jailed weiquan lawyer Chen Guangcheng (陈光诚), were reportedly prevented from doing so by authorities who were keeping Yuan under house arrest. According to Yuan, as the journalists were walking towards her home, the authorities blocked them, attacked them, and threatened to smash them with large stones if they would not leave. The journalists quickly fled the scene, and did not suffer any serious injuries. Yuan had originally planned to visit Chen Guangcheng with her daughter but was intercepted by the authorities.

Shandong authorities prevented a German TV crew from interviewing Yuan Weijing (袁伟静) on January 9. A German journalist told Yuan on January 7 that they wanted to interview her on January 9. On January 8, the Public Security Bureau (PSB) of Yinan County, Shandong Province, reportedly called Yuan's brother-in-law Chen Guangfu (陈光福), telling him that the German crew would not be able to interview Yuan even if they entered her village. As a result the TV crew cancelled the interview the following morning. The PSB’s deputy director allegedly called Chen a traitor for having been repeatedly interviewed by foreign media, and told him that he could be arrested anytime. Yuan’s husband, blind human rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng (陈光诚), is in jail after revealing the presence of forced abortions in Linyi, Shandong Province.

On August 27, Yuan Weijing told RFA from her parents' home in Shandong that she would continue her rights defense work . This is after she was abducted at the Beijing International Airport on August 24, when she tried to fly to the Philippines to receive a human rights award on behalf of her husband Chen Guangcheng. When the officials forcefully sent Yuan back to Shandong, they also beat her, causing bruising. Yuan's freedom of movement is currently still limited.
