A slum housing thousands of petitioners in Fengtai, Beijing will be demolished to make way for a new road, according to official notices. The announcements were posted throughout the petition village to warn residents to leave by September 19th. The local government has stated that residents will be compensated. However, the demolition is likely to affect 4,000 people, including petitioners who fear that they will become homeless since they cannot afford to live elsewhere. Since petitioner numbers tend to increase ahead of important political events, it is speculated that the demolition is scheduled to take place before the upcoming October Party Congress.

According to the NGO China Human Rights Defenders, land rights activist Yang Chunlin was formally arrested on August 3rd. While he has been in detention since July 6th, police explained to Yang’s family that he was suspected of taking money from foreign anti-China organizations. However, Yang’s family suspects that the true cause of his arrest is his collecting 10,000 signatures for his open letter “We want human rights, not the Olympics.” The NGO said that Yang’s case illustrates the Chinese authorities’ sensitivity on linking the Olympics with human rights.

Liang Yongli, the father of a child who contracted encephalitis after being vaccinated at a local health facility in Guangdong, complained that authorities have tried to interfere with his daughter’s medical treatment. Local officials from Guangdong warned the Liang couple to stop writing letters to the mayor of Jiangmen, Guangdong, to stop raising funds on the streets for their daughter’s treatment and to take her home before the second surgery took place. Liang has lodged a civil lawsuit against the local authorities but the court has yet to deliver a verdict.

Human Rights Defender - Yuan Weijing (袁伟静)

遭暴力绑架回家庭监狱 袁伟静将继续维权 (After Violent Abduction, Yuan Weijing to Continue Rights Defense Work)
Radio Free Asia, August 27, 2007

yuanweijing/

On August 27, Yuan Weijing told RFA from her parents' home in Shandong that she would continue her rights defense work . This is after she was abducted at the Beijing International Airport on August 24, when she tried to fly to the Philippines to receive a human rights award on behalf of her husband Chen Guangcheng. When the officials forcefully sent Yuan back to Shandong, they also beat her, causing bruising. Yuan's freedom of movement is currently still limited.
