Guo Quan (郭泉), founder of the China New Democracy Party, was detained on suspicion of “subversion of state power” on November 13. Guo, a former literature professor at Nanjing Normal University, has been detained several times since founding the CNDP in 2007, but police told Guo’s wife that this detention would be “different.” He was detained in May 2008 for ten days after writing articles criticizing the government’s response to the Sichuan earthquake.

China Skirts Questions in UN Torture Review -Groups
Reuters Alert Net, November 10, 2008
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LA462549.htm

China on Monday presented its response to questions posed by the UN Committee Against Torture about interrogation techniques and detention practices within China. Human rights groups were disappointed that China did not address many of the issues raised, including abuses in police stations, prisons, informal custody houses, psychiatric hospitals and other facilities. Instead the Chinese delegation skirted the issues raised and merely provided data on the current treatment of torture in domestic law.
