Activist and writer Guo Feixiong (郭飞雄) was released from prison on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, following the completion of a five-year sentence for “illegal business activity.” Prior to his imprisonment, Guo had also worked as a legal advisor at the Beijing-based Shengzhi Law Office and provided legal assistance on several controversial cases. Amongst these included helping the villagers of Taishi, Guangdong, to remove a corrupt village chief in 2005. The charge of “illegal business activity” was connected with the 2001 publication of a book that Guo had edited on a political scandal in Liaoning.

Chengdu-based rights activist Huang Qi (黄琦) was sentenced this morning to three years’ imprisonment on charges of "illegal possession of state secrets." This sentence comes over three months after he was tried in a closed hearing on August 5, 2009. Huang, who is the founder of Tianwang Human Rights Centre (www.64tianwang.com), was detained on June 10, 2008, by authorities after participating in Sichuan earthquake relief activities and researching and publishing news about the plight of parents who had lost children in the quake and its aftermath. He was formally arrested on July 18, 2008.

When Zhang Qing (张青), wife of imprisoned rights defender Guo Feixiong (郭飞雄), recently tried to register their children for elementary and middle school, they were refused admission. Their son was to begin elementary school in 2007, but he was also refused admission then; Zhang Qing has since been home-schooling him. According to Zhang, local authorities have been threatening the schools to not admit her children. Pu Fei (蒲飞), a volunteer who worked with rights defender Huang Qi (黄琦) at the quake site, was detained along with Huang and another volunteer, Zuo Xiaofan (左晓凡). Pu was released June 25. According to Pu, during his detention he was forced to study Mainland law and read earthquake relief articles during the day, and grilled under torture at night. He believes that they were attempting to compel him to frame Huang, as they asked him about his work with Tianwang, classified information of the group, and Tianwang's objective in going to the quake site. Pu believes that Zuo has also been released, but he told RFA that he has been unable to contact him.

Guo Feixiong's (郭飞雄) wife, Zhang Qing (张青), has issued an open letter to the NPC and CPPCC. The letter demands that the Chinese Government abolish the Reeducation-Through-Labor system and that it abolish the use of electric shock batons on genitals to torture detainees or suspects. Zhang adds that she is currently on a hunger strike. Guo, a human rights defender and legal advisor who had been involved in numerous controversial cases, was sentenced to five years in prison in November 2007.

Authorities reportedly disconnected his family's telephone, mobile, and Internet lines, as well as seizing a computer and documents from his residence. Hu's wife Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕), also a rights defense activist, remains under house arrest.
