The Shenzhen rights defense lawyer Liu Yao (刘尧), who represented Guangdong villagers in a land dispute case, had his sentence for “intentional destruction of properties” reduced from two years to 18 months and suspended for two years, meaning that Liu would not have to serve time. However, unless the guilty verdict is overturned, Liu will not be able to practice law.

Shanghai-based rights defense lawyer Zheng Enchong (郑恩宠) was detained by police for ten hours on April 15; it was the fifth time that he had been summoned over the past week. Before detaining Zheng, police searched his home, making it the third time this year that his home has been ransacked. They confiscated two computers and six cell phones from his home.

On April 4, 2009, Sun Wenguang (孙文广), 75, retired professor of Shandong University, was severely beaten by five unidentified men as he defied university authorities to make the trip to Yingxiong Mountain (英雄山) in Jinan, Shandong Province to mourn late Party Secretary Zhao Ziyang. He was then hospitalized and diagnosed with 3 broken ribs. Currently he is reportedly in stable condition. Between 1966 and 1981, Professor Sun was detained and imprisoned multiple times for a total of more than ten years for expressing his opinions on political issues.

The rally, attended by several hundred petitioners, was convened on the opening day of the 2009 session of the National People’s Congress to show support for the Chinese League of Victims (中国冤民大同盟).
