Noted HIV/AIDS activist Hu Jia (胡佳) was released from prison on Sunday; police and security officers surrounded Hu’s home following his release. The wife of imprisoned HIV/AIDS activist Hu Jia (胡佳), Zeng Jinyan (曾金燕), has fallen out of contact since leaving Shenzhen for Beijing on June 19. Although she boarded the plane in Shenzhen, she was not seen arriving at the Beijing airport; she is suspected of having been detained by authorities. According to an e-mail to a family friend, Zeng and Hu’s mother had been permitted to meet with Hu before his release. Hu was convicted of inciting subversion of state power in April 2008. He is expected to be released on Sunday, June 26, 2011.

Yang Zaixin (杨在新) and Yang Zhonghan (杨忠汉), attorneys in Beihai, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, have been detained on charges of obstructing evidence. On Tuesday, June 14, police officers detained Yang Zaixin and confiscated several items from his home; on Wednesday, officers informed his wife that he had been sent to a detention center and was being held on charges of obstructing evidence gathering. Yang Zhonghan, Yang Zaixin's nephew, was also detained on Tuesday. Yang Zaixin has represented several sensitive cases on land grabs by the government. According to RFA, he was told in April this year that the police were intending to imprison him for instigating false testimonies and obstructing evidence.

On June 10, Sichuan earthquake activist Huang Qi (黄琦) was released from a prison in Chengdu after completing a three-year term on the conviction of “illegal possession of state secrets.” Huang is known for the help he provided to the victims of the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan and for publicizing the plight of the parents who lost their children in the disaster. After his release, he stated his desire to continue his rights defense work.
